At some point, getting older starts to get weird.
You still feel pretty much like the same guy you were at 35. Then you catch your reflection in particularly hostile lighting. Your knees start providing unsolicited commentary. You discover that “a big night” now has a surprisingly early finish.
Apparently, things have changed.
But here’s what I’ve come to believe:
Your best years aren’t behind you. Unless you decide they are.
That idea is at the heart of The Better Half 50+.
I’m in my 50s, and I have absolutely no interest in pretending I’m 30. But I’m equally uninterested in the idea that getting older means slowly surrendering the things that make life interesting.
I want to stay strong. Play sports. Make music. Look sharp. Keep learning. Try new stuff. Laugh a lot. Do work that matters. Stay close to people I care about. And remain curious about what comes next.
Most of all, I want to keep upgrading.
That’s also the idea behind my new book, The Better Half: An Owner’s Manual for Men Over 50.

While writing it, I realized there were far more things I wanted to explore than could reasonably fit into one book. New ideas. Interesting research. Gear worth trying. Exercises worth doing. Food worth eating. Habits worth stealing. And probably a few things worth avoiding altogether.
So I created this.
What you’ll find here
About once a month, I’ll send you Upgrades, recos, and inspiration to help you think better, move better, look better, live better—and get more out of life after 50.
Some will help you get stronger or healthier. Others might help you look sharper, feel more confident, think differently, or simply make life more interesting.
Some will kick your butt. Others may take 30 seconds.
And occasionally I’ll probably recommend something completely unnecessary that nevertheless adds a little fun to the proceedings.
That counts too.
I’m not a doctor, guru, influencer, or longevity billionaire. I’m a writer, lifelong athlete, musician, husband, dad, and enthusiastic work in progress who has spent an unreasonable amount of time experimenting with ways to live better.
Some have worked.
Some definitely have not.
I’ll try to distinguish between the two.
Why “The Better Half”?
Because I think we’ve been sold a lousy story about aging.
The first half of life is supposedly about growth, possibility, and becoming somebody.
The second half?
Maintain what you can. Be sensible. Slow down.
No thanks.
You may have fewer years ahead of you than behind you. That’s just math.
But those years can also come with more experience, better judgment, greater perspective, deeper friendships, more confidence, and a much lower tolerance for bullshit.
Used properly, that’s a pretty formidable combination.
So this isn’t about fighting aging.
It’s about getting better at it.
If that sounds interesting, stick around.
I won’t flood your inbox. When you hear from me, I want it to be worth opening.
And if you discover an Upgrade, reco, story—or something completely ridiculous that works—send it my way. I’d love for The Better Half 50+ to become a place where we steal good ideas from one another.
We’ve still got a lot of living to do.
Let’s get better at it.
Keep upgrading.
I’ll be doing the same.
Cheers, JC
